Jimmy Wilds: The Soldier Who Elected a GovernmentThis is the true story of a boy who grew up in rural Dorset during the depression. As one of the six children of a farm labourer, his early life was defined by poverty. He became a farmhand after leaving school at the age of fourteen, before taking the opportunity to work on the roads. During this time his foreman informed him about Neville Chamberlain’s visit to Munich and how there would be ‘peace in our time’. With his innate foresight, Edgar (Jimmy) Wilds decided to leave the roads and join the army before what he saw as the inevitable happened: the bombing of Britain. He trained as a Royal Corps of Signals dispatch rider. This book follows Jimmy through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, where he worked as a dispatch rider to the Mediterranean Fleet’s Headquarters, HMS Nile, delivering messages to prominent people, including royals and politicians. It describes the meetings he had with those VIPs and tells of the unexpected tasks he was asked to perform. After five years spent sleeping under canvas in the unrelenting heat of Egypt, Jimmy returned to the UK. There he was to deliver some of the most important messages relating to the latter stages of the war. Jimmy’s positive attitude to life, coupled with an unerring sense of duty, shines through all his experiences and encounters. Although Jimmy never saw himself as a hero in any sense of the word, he was, nonetheless, a quiet yet essential part of the war machine. With some hitherto untold stories of wartime events, this volume provides an insight into what happened behind the scenes in some highly important places.
